Stree |2018

I have been so homesick lately! Guess all I needed was some cringe worthy Bollywood Movie to get me all cheered up.. Did this movie deliver? Not Really! However, I love Indian Cinema for all the emotions its wrapped up with.  A little Indian Cinema for the soul is all I need!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Once a Year, in the small town of Chanderi, the menfolk live in fear of abduction by an eccentric female spirit named “Stree”. For years now, people in the town write ” Oh Stree Kal Aana” meaning “Oh Lady Come Tomorrow”.
A young tailor dismissed the idea of the ghost – until he falls for her.

THOUGHTS

  • The plot is loosely based on the urban legend of “Nale Ba” that went viral in Karnataka in the 1990s. The myth goes as- “a witch roams the streets in the night and knocks the door. The witch apparently speaks in voices of your kin so you would be deceived to open the door. If you open it then you will die.”. It is a very popular folk tale in India and even though it is a ridiculous myth, It does have the power to creep you out.

  • So these residents came up with a smart idea of writing “Naale Baa” meaning “come tomorrow”outside the doors and the walls of their house. So when the ghost reads it. It goes back to come again the next day and the cycle repeats.

  • The sheer fact of the ghost being able to read and having that courtesy of coming again later because she doesn’t want to disturb them is rather too comical for me. Right! An Educated and Well mannered Ghost in a remote village where Literacy is not their strong suit.

    Stree (2018)

  • I loved the comical spin on this folk legend honestly! I am yet to find a Bollywood horror movie that gives me goosebumps like the Hollywood ones. So, I wasn’t really expecting much but it does have a feminist message to deliver which is rather plausible.

  • It leaves you with an after thought of how we don’t treat women as an equal with respect to their wants and needs. It  ends with a beautiful message of empowering female education and encouraging their freedom.

  • The movie is high on laughs and pretty entertaining although the ending let me down.

  • Like every other Bollywood Movie, This too has some catchy Item songs and Romantic Beats.  I personally loved Aao Kabhi Haveli Pe!

Overall,  I wouldn’t categorize it as a classic although it has just enough entertainment for a one time watch!

  1. This is the reason I have been avoiding watching the movie. Many reviews have labeled this movie as entertaining and comical, but the ending under-delivers.
