I have nailed the exact kind of Sci-Fi I gravitate towards. I can see a pattern here and it’s pretty evident. I am a sucker for stories that has the time traveling trope, a bonus if it somehow includes some crime or thriller element to the story. The Call is a story of a serial killer and her diabolical and twisted ways of playing with the protagonist’s life.
SYNOPSIS
In 2019, 28-year-old Kim Seo-yeon loses her cellphone while traveling to visit her sick, estranged mother in a rural area. Arriving at her rundown childhood home, she finds a decades-old cordless phone, and through it receives calls from a distressed woman who says she’s being tortured by her mother. After investigating the house, Seo-yeon figures out that the woman on the phone, Oh Young-sook, is living in the same house but in 1999. The two are able to communicate across time through the phone, and exchange information about their lives. Young-sook is orphaned and lives with her adoptive mother, who is a shaman, while Seo-yeon lost her father in a fire that she blames her mother, Eun-ae, for.
THOUGHTS
Time Travel x A Female Serial Killer
It is indeed rare to have crime/thriller stories that feature female serial killers. The Serial Killer has a rather demented perspective and is a lot more twisted than your average Serial Killers. Thanks to the time travel trope of being able to connect to someone in the future and being able to get rid of the evidence.
I love the backstory of how she ends up being a serial killer and how one murder eventually leads to another.
I mean, at least at one point she thought of saving the main girl’s father. Also, she definitely had some serious mental health issues stemming from her own mother. I found her evil & bad-ass even though the method of killing is more reactive that made it more twisted than the usual targeted killing method by serial killers.
The Butterfly Effect
What I love most about the Time Travel Trope is the butterfly effect it creates. The idea of your actions in the past affecting your present and the future plays a major role in how you end up. This movie takes that concept and somehow presents it with a very twisted lens.

The Serial Killer’s mother basically has a mental illness and believes her daughter does too. It’s 1999, so the mother tries to perform some kind of ritual to get rid of the evil inside and let’s just say the whole thing is toxic and disgusting to watch. The mother’s character reminded me of the mother from Stephen King’s book – Carrie

Overall, this was wicked. This movie needs your full attention in order to understand the movie completely Even though the basic concept is not entirely original, the movie will manage to be surprisingly refreshing even to a veteran time travel story lover.
Family Friendly?
Even though, there are no explicit sex or skin show scenes, there is a good amount of graphic violence and dark atmosphere throughout the movie. So, even though you won’t have to switch channels when you’re parents walk in, the content might not be for kids or the fainthearted.
