Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan|2020

I have started work again and moved to a new place. I am missing Mom’s food currently and just the comfort of living with my parents and being pampered. Now, that I have to do my cooking and the laundry every day on my own, it’s getting a bit out of hand and I guess it’s going to take a bit more effort than usual to post regularly . But I am going to try.

Meanwhile, I ended up watching this gay romance Bollywood movie, that some what normalized the gay scene in Indian Movies. I love the emotional approach it took.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan movie review: This Ayushmann and Jeetu ...

The road to achieving a happy ending is a little too rough for two guys Kartik and Aman. While Aman’s family tries hard to battle his love for Kartik, Kartik isn’t prepared to step back until he marries Aman.

THOUGHTS

THE TYPICAL INDIAN HOMOPHOBIA
So we have parents that obviously disagree and try their best to not let the lovers be together. They take the religious route and the emotional blackmailing and the usual drama.
It just creates more problems for the lovers while the parents are convinced their child is just under bad influence and will get “alright”.
It just shows how harder it is to win against the so called Indian understanding of love.

THE SOCIETAL PRESSURE

The story is set around the period of the government making gay marriages legal and I wonder how many people truly were desperately waiting to just claim their love for some publicly. I can only imagine how iconic that moment must have been.
I am so happy it’s legal and it’s nota crime anymore at least in India. but if this movie shows anything is that India still has a long way to go with removing the social stigma of not being a cis gender.

A LITTLE OVER THE TOP ENTERTAINMENT
Even though the comedy is a bit too much, and the acting gives out a little over the top entertainment value. I chose to not let it affect my thoughts on the movie as it provides us with a different perspective of the LGBT community. In this case we have two male lovers who are struggling to validate their love for each other to their family.
I honestly believe, the entertainment was needed to not let the typical Indian audience that find it unnatural of same sex genders to be lovers feel uncomfortable and not watch the movie entirely. I personally feel it’s a bold step to address homophobia in Indian Cinema and it was about time we had some LGBQT love stories to look back on.
The over the top comedy makes it easy for the audience to digest a much needed understanding of love for the same gender without making it too literal and left me with a much needed introspective mood on how little to absolutely no LGBT representation we do have in the mainstream entertainment industry that actually respects the community and doesn’t ridicule them.
The one scene that I really appreciate in this movie is the DDLJ replica that they try to do which made it really hit home with regards to delivering the message,

Rating: ★★★★

Overall, This movie is a step towards the better and using cinema as a tool to address important social issues, and just for that reason alone, this movie managed to win my heart.
