I am over the neck with work at the moment which means I am sitting front of a screen for more than 8 hours during the weekdays. And for the past two months I have made the most of my weekends by travelling to new places and getting some quality time with family. Which means I have no time to sit through a 2 hour long movie or even a 1 hour long episode for that matter. With that being said, I have decided to count Short Films as a Movie to reach my Fandom Goals 😛 It’s not exactly cheating. It’s just dynamism 😛 Hopefully, I will find time to watch longer movies sooner.
Anyways, here is to watching the first short film of the year. And what a great start!
WHAT IS ABOUT?
A tale of nine women navigating through an unusual sisterhood thrust upon them by circumstances.
THOUGHTS
This movie hits home especially for its timing. On the other hand we have people talking about women empowerment and giving women the status of a goddess and then we have the shameful prolonged justice system for one of the most brutal cases carried out on women – in this case Nirbaya. While that could go on for another huge rant, this movie manages to capture the emotion and the fear of a women in a country failing to protect its women in just 13 minutes.
The diverse characters make up for eradicating the excuses society gives while pointing the finger at a women. You have Shruti Hassan with a short dress and a Lady with a Burkha in the same room. We also have a Deaf and Dumb person in the room so it’s not what a women says or wears that can get her in a situation like this. We have well educated characters like Neha Dhupia and a character that plays the role of a Medical Student which shows it doesn’t happen because of a certain choice of profession you pursue. We also have elderly women or the typical housewives that will lean on to the Marital Rape that almost never see the light of justice in India. The vividness in what they wear, their backgrounds and their profession gives out a strong message that it isn’t a particular type of women that has to face such brutal crimes and injustice which really makes you think if anything else.
Without spoiling it too much, the ending will literally convince you a women is not supposed to be blamed ever in such situations and that we really need to think on how the justice systems work in such cases.
Another thing that really stands out to me is how they are all dead which adds on to the pressure of them given justice and still having hope in the system even though it diminishes with every passing minute. You also see how it encourages women to stand for each other and creates a vibe for sisterhood in the society.
This movie is extremely important and a must watch. Highly Recommend!

Overall, This movie shows us the mirror of today’s mindset in India. It forces you to start a conversation with men and the people in general who believe rape is a women’s fault. We need to teach more men the concept of consent. I loved how well the message is delivered in a few minutes. However, I have been told the original short film based on the Asifa Rape Case holds a similar plot and ending but did not get much publicity for obvious reasons and that will be something I watch next as I believe this message needs a lot more attention.
