5 Banned Books I Read That Are Must Reads : Book Recommendations

Hello Book Lovers!
Today for my weekly book recommendations series – I decided to go for Banned Books as the theme. Why ?
Well, recently I came across a lady on my commute to work, who looked at me with judgement in her eyes, while I was readingย  Red, White and Royal Blue.

I did not realize at first, mainly because I thought she is only curious to see what I am reading. I then went on and felt uncomfortable, when I realized she was able to read what I am reading, since she was sitting right beside me and I was on one of those smutty scenes.

Even though, I felt the need to obstruct her view, I was have a debate in my head as to why would she have to judge what I should read either ways.ย  I can’t fully say, if she was just curious or judging me by what I am reading.ย  However, that was a very awkward ten seconds before I decided I don’t care ๐Ÿ˜›

That’s how I ended up googling why our books really banned, and so on!
One of the main reasons of banning books is the explicit scenes in them. Well, I agree there is a certain age group for reading certain books and stuff, I don’t feel a book should be banned entirely. There is so much we learn from books.
I mean would we ever know how to empathize with people different from us if we did not know their story. I think not!

On that note – Let’s begin with the list ๐Ÿ˜€

Fun Home by Alison Bechdel

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic

Fun Home – A Family Tragicomic is a graphic memoir where the main character comes out to her family as a lesbian and then also discovers that her dad was gay.ย  It’s her story about understanding her dysfunctional family and understanding herself.

While I understand why this book was banned and challenged in schools, I feel it is a must read! It deal with LGBT issues, family drama and most of all acceptance.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

The Lottery has been one of my favorite reads by Shirley Jackson. I was truly devastated to know this book was banned or even receive a backlash in the first place. Why would this offence anybody I do not understand.

An amazing story that deals with topics likeย  how people can turn on each other so easily, blindly follow traditions without much reasoning, how cruel they can be to save their own skin and most importantly mob psychology that I believe is the main problem in the world right now.

If you have to read one banned book this year, please read this one if you already haven’t! Can’t recommend this book enough!

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner is an unforgettable, unlikely story on friendship between a wealthy boy, and the song of his father’s son. It is power of reading, the price f betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sonsโ€”their love, their sacrifices, their lies told against the devastating backdrop of the history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years.

This was was banned for his sexually explicit content, offensive language, and age inappropriateness. It was also claimed to ย have ‘lead to terrorism’ and ‘promote Islam.”
Like how can u get that from reading such a heartbreaking story about living in oppression, god alone knows!

This is such an important read in so many ways!

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

In Laurie Halse Anderson’s powerful novel, an utterly believable heroine with a bitterly ironic voice delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school. She speaks for many a disenfranchised teenager while demonstrating the importance of speaking up for oneself.

A story about a rape survivor! A story that encourages to speak up for yourself, to believe it is not your fault. Why is this banned again? I mean if your child has to come across sexual content, let him read this and know how wrong it is if there is no consent, and what a rape survivor has to go through.

Can’t recommend this enough! How can a book be banned for dealing with such an important issue? What is wrong with the world?

Looking For Alaska by John Green

Book Title

As a teenager,ย  we are always thinking nobody understands us. We always feel misunderstood. A story about a girl dealing with depression.ย  Yes, of course! This book contains teen drinking, smoking, sexual content and language butย  isn’t that the bitter truth of reality today’s culture? Why are we not addressing it?
It’s about depression, suicide, friendship, forgiveness and, ultimately, hope. It’s about, as the characters would say, learning how to navigate and survive the labyrinth of suffering that is life, something we all must do. Instead of turning to suicide

A must read . Especially for teenagers!

Have you read a book that was banned and it hit you how important the book is, and how utterly stupid and coward it is for it to be banned in the first place?ย  Would like to know you thoughts on banned books . Lets Chat!
