I was recommended the show by a friend and discovered this was based on a book. It was obvious I had to read the book first to watch this and that’s what I did. Having both read the book (review) and watched the first Season of YOU. I have come to a realization, I am attracted to problematic guys faster than the speed of light.:P

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Penn Badgley, Ambyr Childers, and Victoria Pedretti in You (2018)

A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.
Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, YOU is a 21st century love story that asks, “What would you do for love?” When a brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, his answer becomes clear: anything. Using the internet and social media as his tools to gather the most intimate of details and get close to her, a charming and awkward crush quickly becomes obsession as he quietly and strategically removes every obstacle – and person – in his way.

THOUGHTS

I was already sold on the plot before I started watching this series. But I guess am always disappointed by book adaptations.. However, what makes this series worth a watch is its characters and how well it was played. I absolutely adored how much detail is put into this series to bring the book into life. Even though it’s not a word to word adaptation which was expected. The bookstore scenes and the creepy vibes are well translated into the series.

Elizabeth Lail in You (2018)

BECK is so beautiful. This actress has done total justice to her character and I loved how confused and a total mess she is in her life. She has daddy issues and it shows. Also her fashion sense and hairstyle is goals.

Luca Padovan in You (2018)

PACO, Joe’s next door neighbors kid and his story has more screen time than the book. I loved how the series highlights how domestic violence and bad parenting really does affect a kid. Also, he has some nice choices in books. After all, Joe is his mentor 😛

Penn Badgley and Elizabeth Lail in You (2018)

The Romance in the whole series is messed up on every level. Even though, with all the old fashion style and cliche moments. This series manages to dissect each and every cliche moment and paints it with extra creepiness all over.

Penn Badgley in You (2018)

Joe , who is the main reason I adore this show who is extremely problematic, a stalker and a murderer manages to be witty, charming, has his fuckboy game on point, and when it comes to romance – plays it the typical old fashion way. Needless to say, He is the most like able character in the whole series and I absolutely adore how his brain works. I was constantly rooting for him.

The other characters in the series – Penny which brings in the super controlling best friend and LGBT brownie points to the show was very well done. Candace who is Joe’s ex girlfriend and helps us understand Joe’s backstory is an absolute bitch honestly. I hate cheaters and they deserve to die. I guess now I know why I support Joe. 😛

P.s – I totally need to make a Reading List on all the books mentioned in the series. 😛

Rating: ★★★⍣

Overall, YOU keeps you on the edge with its plot twists and amazing monologue by Joe. It’s surprising how well he is at stalking. You’ll definitely end up taking some notes. The plot is definitely captivating and the characters are a delight to watch. Would totally recommend watching this.
