Earth Heroes: 20 Inspiring Stories of People Saving Our World by Lily Dyu

To be honest, It’s very depressing to know the earth is on its way to become inhabitable. Maybe hundreds and thousands of years from now but the journey has begun and sadly enough, it almost seems like the world is too caught up in other stuff to bother about mere existential crisis.
I first came across this book in a Sustainability Seminar I attended, and decided I wanted to read this – even if it meant all it gave was hope that someone somewhere is doing something about it.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Earth Heroes: 20 Inspiring Stories of People Saving Our World

When faced with climate change, the biggest threat that our planet has ever confronted, it’s easy to feel as if nothing you do can really make a difference . . . but this book proves that individual people can change the world. With twenty inspirational stories celebrating the pioneering work of a selection of Earth Heroes from all around the globe, from Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough to Yin Yuzhen and Isatou Ceesay, each tale is a beacon of hope in the fight for the future of our planet, proving that one person, no matter how small, can make a difference.

THOUGHTS

As an Interior Designer, I feel responsible to choose more Sustainable products but it’s not always what the project can include. This book did not just inspire me to be more conscious of what I already do for my environment but also research more of what I can do. It can get pretty convenient to leave the heater on the whole day, or empty a can of water down the sink just because it’s not hot enough. Well, I do that a lot and I need to stop it. Like now!

This book has been an eye opener in so many ways. Not all of them are from rich families or environmentalist. But, the one thing common is that the situation they faced did not make them feel selfish or wonder ” Why should I care about it? It’s not my problem to care” They are Heroes for how they turned the situation around for their benefit and made the world a better place along the way.

They are diverse stories all around the globe – – that doesn’t look at age or race or religion. We have kids protesting and trying to bring more awareness to the issue, and a woman making a whole neighborhood progress through her recycled plastic jeweler business.

My favorite though has been Yin Yuzhen – A woman who created a forest out of a desert. Imagine the determination! ~I was immensely inspired by Stella McCartney for totally boycotting animal use in her clothing and not encouraging fast fashion which I believe is a growing problem in this day and age. Also – I seen this episode of Patriot Act by Hasan Minhaj and felt guilt for the sheer amount of clothes I bought this year. :/

RATING: ★★★★★

Overall, This book is true to it’s words and left me inspired and more accountable for my own actions. I have stopped the use of Plastic Bottles and carry my own bottle. Little Changes for now, but it’s just the beginning.

What are some ways you’ll make sure you contribute to
the earth?
