Anything Sherlock Holmes, and I am sold 😛 This makes me want to read all those Sherlock Holmes books I read as a teen. I don’t remember them much either ways.. A project for next year maybe 😛
England, 1884 – a world on the brink of change. On the morning of her 16th birthday, Enola Holmes wakes to find that her mother has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she’s gone or why. After a free-spirited childhood, Enola suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, both set on sending her away to a finishing school for “proper” young ladies. Refusing to follow their wishes, Enola escapes to search for her mother in London. But when her journey finds her entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runaway Lord , Enola becomes a super-sleuth in her own right, outwitting her famous brother as she unravels a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history.
I love Sherlock Holmes, but this is not about him. This is about his sister and her adventures. It’s her journey of growing up to be a woman, understanding the world and making her own history. I honestly went into this quite excited because well I get excited about anything Holmes.
At least this did not disappoint, she has some of the same trait that Sherlock has but as she is still a kid, it’s still raw and lack the benefits of experience. Overall, it was quite interesting to see this character arch.
COMMENTARY ON FEMINISM & CLASS DIFFERENCES
Another thing I loved about the movie, is how it highlights the issues women faced during the Victorian period. Her mother teacher to be a fighter, ask questions, raise her voice basically everything that was considered unladylike.
With Enola’s braveness, you can see how she rebels against injustice. A lot of mixed opinions on this one though, as people tend to forget s set in the Victorian era when brave women fought for the rights we now rightfully have at least to some extent. Like – the right to vote!
RATING : 4.0/5.0
Overall , this was entertaining and has quite a commentary on social issues women face. I can see why this is not so popular with Sherlock Holmes fan as it lacks that mystery and crime solving thrill. Also, there is a whole new side shown of Sherlock who cares for his sister and has a much lighter side than the movies and TV shows that won’t sit well with some fans.
