It’s October! That time f the year where I voluntary decide to get spooked out and have nightmares. Not that rest of the year I don’t get scared. In fact, let me exaggerate and claim to be the biggest scared cat on earth. One time, I watched a horror movie and scared myself while passing by a mirror. πŸ™‚ So now you might be able to guess how easily thing scan spook me out. Hence, when I review horror movies know I am not really a thick skinned person. If I had to rate Monster House on a scale of how scary this was, I am going for a 2/5. This makes it great for kids which is who this movie is targeted towards but worth a watch for adults as well πŸ˜›

SYNOPSIS

Monster House (2006)

13-year-old DJ is observing his neighbor Nebbercracker on the other side of the street in the suburb that destroys tricycles of children that trespass his lawn. When DJ’s parents travel on the eve of Halloween and the abusive nanny Zee stays with him, he calls his clumsy best friend Chowder to play basketball. But when the ball falls in Nebbercracker’s lawn, the old man has a heart attack, and soon they find that the house is a monster. Later the boys rescue the smart Jenny from the house and the trio unsuccessfully tries to convince the babysitter, her boyfriend Bones and two police officers that the haunted house is a monster, but nobody believes them. The teenagers ask their video-game addicted acquaintance Skull how to destroy the house, and they disclose its secret on the Halloween night.

THOUGHTS

– A haunted house is a traditional horror trope along with a halloween setting in the background. I absolutely loved some of the scenes where the monster house comes to life.

– I found the scenes inside the house to be unimaginative as an adult. It did not excite me as much.

-Saying that, I love the backstory of how the house came to be a monster. The old man that seemed evil, and his attachment towards the house.

-The trio of kids who carry out this whole mission of figuring out the monster house were entertaining enough with their banter.

-The horror is achieved with good cinematography and animation alone. The storyline isn’t much spooky to begin with. As a kid, I would have been a bit more scare though.

RATING : 3.5/5.0

Overall, I found this entertaining enough, with a good message in the end too. Kids will enjoy the adventure and will be spooked out when the house comes alive. Adults will love the backstory and enjoy the good animation.
