Paatal Lok | 2020

I can finally say, I am happy to have an Amazon Prime Video Subscription. These rare gems I find make it worth while. To be honest, I rarely find good ones that are included with prime and I would also be interested to watch.
This has everything a good plot, multi layered characters, a much needed realistic view of society and an entertainment value with well delivered dialogues and scenes

WHAT IS IT ABOUT

A down and out cop lands the case of a lifetime when four suspects are nabbed in the assassination attempt of a journalist. The pursuit of it leads him to ‘Paatal Lok’, and to shocking discoveries in the past of the four suspects.

THOUGHTS

The Suspects
Each and every character in this series played a significant role in the series but the main anti-hero named Vishal Tyagi or Hathoda Tyagi left quite a mark on the criminal mindset and how criminals are born and evolved due to lack of proper systems in place. Each criminal had a never ending cycle of criminal activity that they had to do to get by in life which led them to a point they became assassins and crime became their way of life.

Addressing Stereotypes
I loved how this series addresses so many stereotypes all at once. We have a Muslim policeman that is doubted, ridiculed and made to feel like an outsider. He is struggling to get basic recognition from his peers only because he is a Muslim. We have a suspect that is Muslim and is treated way worse than the others, and the media playing their part in fueling people’s prejudices. We have a transgender character suspect that is again ridiculed and looked down upon. We have a character that has gotten into crime due to the hate showered upon him as he is from a lower caste category. There were so many instances throughout the series that felt true to real life which made this extremely nail biting to watch, and the best part it does not let you down with a typical Bollywood ending of everything just got better in the end and the world is a changed place now.
I guess we can all agree reality is far different from what they show in movie endings.

The Corruption
Like all crime movies this one too features corruption on different levels and the manipulation of facts that are given to the common man. I absolutely loved the raw and fresh take on crime that takes place in this one.

Rating: ★★★★★

Overall, Paatal Lok is one of the finest Crime thriller stories I have watched. I highly recommend this one.
