MOVIE REVIEWS MOVIES

Cast Away| 2000

Another Tom Hanks Movie! I am always left in awe after watching his movies and this one was another good movie I wanted to re- visit during the lock down.
Personally, the whole lock down and isolation phase reminded me a lot of this movie, except this one is more on the extremes πŸ˜›

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Tom Hanks in Cast Away (2000)

A FedEx executive undergoes a physical and emotional transformation after crash landing on a deserted island.

THOUGHTS

THE DESERTED ISLAND SETTING
I love those stranded in the middle of nowhere survival stories. Cast Away makes it extremely real when it comes to this setting. Nature isn’t playing against him and he is back to being a stone age man with the basic amenities that nature can offer. It is not one of those movies where there is some action every second of the movie. In fact, it’s a slow burn where it provoke you to think and digest what lays ahead in the story.

EXPLORING ISOLATION

The scene where he finds a volley ball and draws a face on it, and starts talking to it is so powerful and well done. It shows how important human connection is. By the end of it, he get emotionally attached to it, just like he would to a normal human being.
It gets you back to thinking what is absolutely necessary in life and what are just frills we seem we need.

THE WORLD MOVES ON
The movie doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh truth, and shows the disorientation the character faces after being rescued and getting back to normal life. He is seen figuring out the pieces he left behind like his fiance, and work life and the years he missed. The world went on without him, and had long moved on. While, all he had were connections and feelings that were as fresh as five years ago.

Rating: β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Needless to say, I was deeply touched and it will remain a classic to me for years to come.
